I almost don’t know where to begin. How about at the beginning? From the get go, this story took me right back to my childhood, memories of sunny days, lying in the grass with childhood friends and family members, creating images from clouds; playing hid and go seek; climbing trees; my first ‘childhood crush’. I’ve never read another story that took me back to those cherished, childhood memories the way Once Upon Another Time by Jettie Woodruff has done. Nope. Not a single one.
Talk about inducing a longing to travel back in time with the chance to do it all again, knowing what I know now. If only I could log how many times I’ve wanted to do this very thing. Jessie Fenton gets the chance in this bewitching tale of love, wishes, and regrets.
And Royal … Royal is a boy after my own heart … and Jessie’s. It’s ironic that, as I read this book, one of my own childhood friends stepped back into my life, and I couldn’t help comparing this story to ours. Jessie reminds me much of myself when I was young: daring, outspoken, and without a care in the world for the worries and fears of this world.
Royal thought she hung the moon. He followed her into every single dare, challenge, and adventure Jessie could goad him into, because Royal’s love for Jessie, even from the young age of seven, was all consuming, and he blindly and willingly followed her anywhere, everywhere.
So, how does a forty-seven year old woman find herself a seventeen year old senior again? That’s where Shotgun Roxy comes in, and I loved her personality immediately.
But it was Jessie’s “Grams” who really captured my heart, my respect.
If you take a chance on this romantic, young adult, fantasy fable, expect to ride an emotional, funny, sensitive, tear-jerking, warming roller coaster; yes, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll long to be spontaneous, and make decisions as you once would have – as the young you. Remember that person? I had forgotten too, but I now remember her, and I miss her.
Don’t sit this one out. The love between Royal and Jessie travels through time, reaches for the stars, and they’ve become my very favorite book couple – ever.
You’ll want to throw your Kindle a time or two, but don’t do it. I laughed, I cried, and I did not see that coming! You’ll know what I mean when you read this charming tale, Once Upon Another Time.
